Do You Know How Many Times I've Been to Big Gay Ice Cream?

A fuck ton.

Every June, I went on many field trips with NYC LGBTQ+ Gender Sexuality Alliance (otherwise known as Gay Straight Alliance) clubs from High Schools and Middle Schools. I did this as a Social Worker and Educational Program Manager that really tried to get the kids riled up about visiting the site of the Stonewall Riots…they’d be pretty on board until someone inevitably chimed in and said, “Oh, how about Big Gay Ice Cream?!”

Listen. I know June, Pride Month, has been deeply Pinkwashed. The Pride March becoming a Pride Parade is real and we can talk about who’s fault that is. But for years I would give monthly lesson plans to Queer youth all over NYC throughought the school year on many of these topics. So when June came around, the end of the school year coinciding with Pride, well, I too wanted to just goof off, hang out and grab ice cream. As a Queer community learning together about our history and doing the work that still needs to be done, we have to remember to enjoy ourselves and each other too. However, maybe don’t embark on an annual journey to become lactose intolerant.

This month I will do my best to balance what it means to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community, both the good and the bad, but first I want to take this opportunity to promote what is going on locally.

The Division of Maplewood Arts and Council has quite a lot planned and listed:
